Cecilia Vicuna artist research

When transforming a wooden triangle using Richard Serra’s verb list I was inspired whilst creating by the work of Cecilia Vicuña. She’s a Chilean artist and poet who’s work is often noted for themes of language, memory, and extinction as well as social themes of politics, ecological destruction, and economic disparity. She often works by hanging objects, these are woven together and she most commonly uses fabrics, plant fibres, found objects, and rope. To me this is very apparent in her piece that’s currently in the TATE modern turbine hall, Brain Forest Quipu. She worked alongside other artist as well as activist from Latin American communities to truly bring this 27 meter high floor to ceiling behemoth to life. She used a range of organic materials, including found objects, unspun wool, plant fibres, rope, and cardboard to create a ghost like almost bleached look which to me shows the utter death and deforestation of trees in the amazon, which are some of the biggest in the world. I really like here work and could definitely see myself exploring this style further as well as the use of found materials like the way she does.
